Just a short detour from southern Utah’s main tourist routes, near the quiet town of Orderville, lies a passage that seems lifted from the pages of a fantasy novel. Known as the Belly of the Dragon, this sculpted sandstone tunnel invites visitors into a world of shadow, texture, and light that feels both ancient and otherworldly.
Despite its name, this isn’t a natural cave formed over millennia. It was originally carved as a drainage culvert beneath Highway 89, designed to channel runoff water from the canyons. Over time, the water’s relentless movement etched organic, rib-like patterns into the sandstone walls, giving the illusion of walking inside a slumbering creature.
Only about 50 meters long, the tunnel’s short length belies the intensity of the experience. Inside, footsteps echo deeply, and the sunlight filtering through both ends casts fiery orange hues and shifting shadows, creating an atmosphere that’s almost ceremonial. Photographers prize it at sunrise and sunset, when the lighting transforms the tunnel into a glowing corridor of natural artistry.
Despite its eerie beauty, Belly of the Dragon remains largely unknown to international travelers and is rarely featured in mainstream travel guides. Access is easy—a short walk from a nearby pull-off—but caution is advised after rain, as flash flooding can make it unsafe.
