Part of the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument, White Pocket is far less known than its famous neighbor The Wave. Unlike The Wave, however, White Pocket doesn’t require a permit. What it does require is determination: reaching it involves driving over deep, soft sand for over 12 miles, only doable with a high-clearance 4WD and strong navigational skills. This remoteness is its best protection, ensuring that those who make it here are rewarded with near-total solitude.
The formations are made of Navajo sandstone, shaped by millions of years of erosion, compression, and tectonic uplift. The result is a swirling canvas of white, pink, orange, and crimson lines, forming structures that resemble melting stone, massive coral beds, or the folds of a sleeping giant’s brain. Some surfaces crack into polygonal mosaics, while others seem to bubble and flow as if still in motion.
